Background of the Study
Traditional birth attendants (TBAs) have been integral to maternal care in many Nigerian communities, particularly in Igueben Local Government Area, Edo State. TBAs offer culturally embedded support during pregnancy and childbirth, often extending their care to address emotional and psychological needs (Egharevba, 2023). Their role transcends clinical practices, providing holistic care that integrates cultural beliefs and community values. Recent literature suggests that the personalized care provided by TBAs can positively affect maternal mental health by alleviating stress and anxiety associated with childbirth (Ibrahim, 2024). Nonetheless, challenges such as limited formal training and resource constraints may affect the quality of care, highlighting the need for a balanced understanding of their role (Uhunmwangho, 2025). This study critically examines the impact of TBAs on maternal mental health, exploring how culturally sensitive practices contribute to emotional support and recovery during and after childbirth, while also addressing gaps in formal healthcare provision (Osagie, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
In Igueben, despite the widespread use of traditional birth attendants, there remains limited empirical evidence regarding their influence on maternal mental health. Many women experience postpartum anxiety and depression, yet the role of TBAs in mitigating these issues is underexplored (Omoregie, 2024). The lack of structured evaluations creates uncertainty about the overall benefits and limitations of TBA practices. This study seeks to determine whether the emotional support provided by TBAs adequately addresses maternal mental health challenges and to identify areas where collaboration with formal health services could improve outcomes (Evbuomwan, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate the influence of TBAs on maternal mental health.

  2. To identify supportive practices that enhance emotional well-being during childbirth.

  3. To recommend strategies for integrating TBAs with formal healthcare systems.

Research Questions:

  1. How do TBAs impact maternal mental health in Igueben?

  2. What traditional practices contribute to emotional support?

  3. How can TBAs be effectively integrated with formal health services?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. TBAs significantly enhance maternal mental health outcomes.

  2. Traditional practices by TBAs reduce postpartum psychological distress.

  3. Integration with formal healthcare improves overall maternal care.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it sheds light on the critical role of traditional birth attendants in supporting maternal mental health. The findings will inform policymakers and healthcare providers, guiding the integration of traditional and modern practices to improve maternal care and emotional well-being in Igueben (Izevbaye, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to examining the role of traditional birth attendants in maternal mental health in Igueben Local Government Area, Edo State, excluding other maternal health factors.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs): Community-based practitioners who assist with childbirth.

  • Maternal Mental Health: The psychological well-being of mothers during and after pregnancy.

  • Holistic Care: A comprehensive approach that addresses physical, emotional, and social needs.
